How to Write a Business Plan in the UK: Complete 2026 Guide

Step-by-step guide to writing a UK business plan. Structure, financials, market analysis, and what banks, investors, and visa endorsing bodies look for.

A UK business plan should be 20–40 pages covering your market opportunity, business model, financial projections, team, and risk analysis. The structure varies by audience — bank loans emphasise cash flow and security; investor decks emphasise growth and return; visa applications emphasise innovation and job creation.

Business plan structure

  1. Executive summary (1–2 pages): The entire plan in miniature. Write this last.
  2. Business description (1–2 pages): What you do, who you serve, what problem you solve.
  3. Market analysis (3–5 pages): TAM, SAM, SOM. UK-specific data. Competitor landscape.
  4. Products/services (2–3 pages): What you sell, pricing, differentiation.
  5. Marketing strategy (2–3 pages): How you will acquire customers. Channels, budget, timeline.
  6. Operations (1–2 pages): Location, team, technology, suppliers.
  7. Financial projections (3–5 pages): 3–5 year P&L, cash flow, balance sheet. Monthly for year 1.
  8. Funding requirements (1 page): How much you need, what you will spend it on, expected return.
  9. Risk analysis (1 page): Top 5 risks with mitigations.
  10. Appendices: CVs, market research, letters of intent, financial model assumptions.

For bank loans

Banks care about: cash flow (can you repay?), security (what assets back the loan?), and trading history. Be conservative with projections. Show monthly cash flow for 2 years. Include personal financial statements if the bank requires personal guarantees.

For investors

Investors care about: market size (TAM £1B+?), growth rate, team, defensibility, and return path. Be ambitious but credible. Include a cap table, dilution analysis, and comparable exit multiples.

For Innovator Founder visa

The endorsing body assesses innovation, viability, and scalability. Map your plan explicitly to these three criteria. Include customer evidence (even a letter of intent counts). Meridian has written plans approved by all major endorsing bodies — from £1,090.
